Message from OPEN Houston on Addressing Racial Injustice

TALIB DHANJI - ZAHID RAHMAN - JUNE 2, 2020

Dear friends of OPEN Houston,

As an organization that is committed to the equality and dignity of all people, OPEN Houston mourns the death of George Floyd, who was killed on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis.

We recognize that in the hearts of our fellow citizens of color, incidents like these are connected to a long history of unequal justice in our country. Like every other citizen, officers must be held accountable for their actions if they misuse their authority and bring unnecessary harm on the people they are called to protect. We are grateful to law enforcement officers that uphold justice with dignity and integrity and bravely risk their lives for the sake of others.

We ask our leaders to take swift action to address the racial injustices within our law enforcement systems and communities so that no more lives are lost in this manner again.

Over our organization’s history, we have worked to build an environment where we can all support each other, build strong relationships, and value respect for all people. We stand in solidarity with African American communities across the country, and remain committed to equal rights for every person and equal protection for all citizens under the law.

May God bless America.

Sincerely,
